Dir. Mamoru Hosoda. 2009, 114 mins. Japan. 4K DCP. Newly available in a 4K remaster, Academy Award–nominated director Mamoru Hosoda’s 2009 film Summer Wars surprisingly blends cyber-apocalypse with summertime at Grandma’s. When shy high-schooler Kenji is “hired” by popular upperclassman Natsuki to pose as her fake boyfriend at her grandmother’s 90th birthday celebration in the mountains of Nagano, the rural idyll is interrupted by disruptions in OZ, the virtual world that powers everyday life. OZ, beautifully rendered by Hosoda as an absurd high-tech playground, is highjacked by a rogue AI capturing people’s identities and threatening dire real-world consequences. Into this maelstrom, Kenji, Natsuki, and her extended family—roused to action by the formidable matriarch—mobilize to save the day using all the human connections they can muster.
