Followed by a Q&A with Cynthia Nixon
Dir. Terence Davies. 2017, 126 mins. DCP. With Cynthia Nixon, Jennifer Ehle, Keith Carradine. In Davies’s incandescent and haunting masterwork, named the best movie of 2017 by Reverse Shot, Cynthia Nixon delivers a triumphant performance as Emily Dickinson. Nixon embodies the piercing wit, intellectual independence, and personal pathos of the poet, whose genius only came to be recognized after her death. Davies evokes Dickinson’s deep attachment to her close-knit family along with the manners, mores, and spiritual convictions of her time that she struggled with and transcended in her poetry. According to Richard Brody in The New Yorker,” A Quiet Passion will take its place as one of his finest creations, as one of the great movies of the time.” Preceded by: Passing Time (Davies, 2023, 3 mins)
