Dir. Camilla Nielsson. 2014, 100 mins. In Shona with English subtitles. Filmed over three years, Democrats chronicles the drafting of Zimbabwe’s first democratic constitution. Following one of Africa’s bloodiest elections, an opposition party is trying to wrest power from the longtime autocratic ruler, President Robert Mugabe, and nonviolently lead the country into a modern democracy. It can either lead toward liberation or renewed repression. One of the finest observational documentaries of the past decade, Democrats steadfastly chronicles an often tragicomic political process in which idealism rubs up against systemic corruption.
Includes admission to Camilla Nielsson’s The President, screening at 4 p.m.
