Dir. Robert Longo. 1995, 96 mins. With Keanu Reeves, Dolph Lundgren, Udo Kier, Takeshi Kitano, Ice-T. Artist Robert Longo’s singular vision meets Hollywood in Johnny Mnemonic, adapted from William Gibson’s story of the same name and set in a dystopian 2021. Four years before he became Neo in The Matrix, Reeves plays a robot-like data courier, whose brain has been altered to serve as secure storage for sensitive data, at the expense of his childhood memories. Dismissed at the time as “high-tech trash” (Variety), the film is nevertheless thoroughly entertaining, and foreshadows our current networked society, cautioning against overdependence on technology.
