This August, Museum of the Moving Image presents a wide range of summer movies, free community programs, and new exhibits. A highlight of every summer, MoMI’s See It Big: 70mm series returns with a selection of five big-screen films, kicking off with Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, and with the notable addition of Sinners. In the galleries, the major exhibition Mission: Impossible–Story and Spectacle continues all summer; two installations of restored Fleischer Studios’ cartoons; the video game WeatherSys Admin, playable for free in the lobby; works by Robert Hodgin and Melissa Wiederrecht on the Schlosser Media Wall; and more. Starting August 28, Dither Studies: A Contentless Dithering System by Daniel Temkin will be installed on the Schlosser Media Wall.

CatVideoFest, the 2025 compilation of the internet’s latest and best cat videos, returns August 2–10, with a portion of ticket sales being donated to local nonprofit Catstoria Cat Rescue. MoMI’s Tom Cruise retrospective wraps up with heavy hitters including Days of Thunder (70mm), Jack Reacher, Tropic Thunder, and more; Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke will appear August 18 with a preview screening of their new movie, Honey Don’t! and also introduce Robert Altman’s The Long Goodbye; and to coincide with the release of Ari Aster’s new film Eddington, the Museum will present Eddington City Limits, a five-film series co-programmed by Aster. The Museum will present a members-only preview screening of Nobody 2, with stars Bob Odenkirk and Sharon Stone in person.

As part of Open Worlds free community programming, the Museum will host Bollywood Disco: Talk + Party (Aug. 1); the science-centered program Magic Hours: Engineering Lighting for Cinema featuring screenings and activities with a focus on the impact of Black innovations in the field (Aug. 2); and a Caribbean Heritage Celebration (Aug. 8). Other Open Worlds programs will be announced as they are confirmed.

Nashville with Ari Aster in person
