Part of Tom Cruise, Above and Beyond
Dir. Michael Mann. 2004, 120 mins. U.S. 35mm. With Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, Jada Pinkett Smith, Mark Ruffalo. With a shock of white hair, Cruise expertly inhabits one of his true unambiguously villainous characters. Mann’s first feature to be shot primarily on Hi-Def video imbues its compact noir scenario about a neurotic cabbie (Foxx) who picks up a sociopathic hitman (Cruise) with global implications, shrouding the action in layer upon layer of nocturnal Los Angeles mood. A return to the lonely intimacy of the director’s earlier features (Thief, Manhunter), the film is a brooding study in disconnection and inhumanity, traced across a weblike urban landscape. Here, a taxi’s dim interior light reveals characters trapped within their own delusions.
