An Evening Song (for three voices)

Dir. Graham Swon. U.S. 2023, 86 mins. DCP. With Deragh Campbell, Hannah Gross, Peter Vack. Combining elements of Gothic horror, pulp mystery, and period romance, An Evening Song (for three voices) is set in 1939 and tells the story of a married couple (Vack and Gross), new to the rural Midwest, who become enamored of their pious housekeeper (Campbell). Swon’s sophomore feature displays a remarkable devotion to craft; he and cinematographer Barton Cortright created a custom setup that combined a large-format photography camera with a digital one, resulting in a classical vignette that never reveals the full frame—not unlike the effect of the narrative itself, which interweaves perspectives. The melodrama that bubbles beneath the story’s surface finds release in the performances of its remarkable cast. New York premiere

About the filmmaker:

Graham Swon is an American producer and director. He has worked with many independent filmmakers, including Matías Piñeiro, Ted Fendt, Joanna Arnow, and Ricky D’Ambrose. In 2016, he was named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film.” In 2023 he won the Independent Spirit John Cassavetes Award for his production of The Cathedral, and in 2024 was nominated from the Independent Spirit Producers Award. An Evening Song (for three voices) is his second film as writer/director.
