With Reid Davenport in person
Dir. Reid Davenport. 2022, 76 mins. DCP. After a circus tent goes up outside of his apartment, disabled filmmaker Reid Davenport considers the legacy of the Freak Show and whether his own autobiographical filmmaking has fit into its tradition. Meanwhile, Davenport employs a new methodology for self-portraiture: rather than directing our gaze at himself, he points the camera outward—at the subway, his apartment, the sidewalks, intersections, and doorways of the city. Whether he’s holding the camera in his hand, resting it in his lap, or mounting it on the armrest of his wheelchair to capture a textured, pavement-rich kaleidoscope, Davenport offers a poetic, purposeful, political, and radically subjective vision that reveals how he encounters the world. Winner of Best Director in the U.S. Documentary Competition at the 2022 Sundance Film, and nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 2022 Gotham Awards, I Didn’t See You There is a groundbreaking work of nonfiction that offers a uniquely transporting cinematic experience.
