SCREENING

Legend

Location: Redstone Theater

Dir. Ridley Scott. 1985, 94 mins. U.S. DCP. With Tom Cruise, Mia Sara, Tim Curry, David Bennent, Billy Barty, Alice Playten. Ridley Scott’s evocative fantasia, his first film following Blade Runner, was misunderstood upon release but has gradually accrued cult favorite status due to the undeniable beauty of its lovingly rendered visuals and its eccentric approach to storytelling. Cruise plays a spritely forest dweller who becomes an unlikely hero after he must save his love, Princess Lili (Sara), from the forces of evil, personified as the monstrous Lord of Darkness (played by Tim Curry, in heavy, Oscar-nominated special effects makeup). A rich tapestry of unicorns, goblins, fairies, and elves, Legend is sheer sensory overload, with glittering storybook visuals by Excalibur DP Alex Thomson and a throbbing score by Tangerine Dream.
