Persistent Visions Program 2: Earth in the Mouth

Beginning with a recitation of Brecht and Weill’s “The Drowned Girl” in Friedl vom Gröller’s Drowned, here is a sequence of odes, melancholy and ecstatic, to the wonderful difficulty of currently inhabiting this world in these bodies from relentlessly pulsating travelogues (Earth in the Mouth) to painstakingly serene nature studies (La source de la loire).

About the Filmmakers:

Blanca Garcia is a writer, researcher, librarian, and filmmaker from Spain, currently based in London. Her work examines the implications of reversal film’s indexicality and the interactions between visual and verbal poetics through in-camera edit. Garcia collaborates with Revista y Asociación Lumière, which she co-edited from 2015-2017. Her films have been screened at Xcèntric, CBA, VideoEx, Fracto, and other festivals. 

Friedl vom Gröller is an Austrian photographer, filmmaker, and visual artist born in London. She is a founder and director of the School for Artistic Photography (until 2010) and School for Independent Film in Vienna. Her films have been screened at the Toronto Film Festival, Hong Kong Film Festival, Diagonale, the Berlin Biennale, and others. Her photography was exhibited at Galerie Fotohof, Generali Foundation, Fotogalerie, Haus der Kunst, MUMOK, Centre Pompidou, and others. 

Henry Hills is a filmmaker who has been working with dense, intensely rhythmic experimental films since 1975. He is a longtime  resident of New York’s East Village with ongoing working relationships with the L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E Poets, composer John Zorn, and choreographer Sally Silvers. In 2009, he was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship in the Creative Arts, and from 2005-2019 has been a visiting professor at the Czech National Film Academy in Prague.  

Rose Lowder is a French and Peruvian filmmaker and artist focusing on visual perception in relation to the cinematographic means of expression. She composes the image in the camera by interweaving the frames as the film strip passes the lens several times. Lowder is also the cofounder of Archives du film expérimental d’Avignon (AFEA, 1981), created to acquire 16mm films and bibliographic documents, and has published several books.   

Ewelina Rosińska is a Polish experimental filmmaker based in Germany and Portugal. Her first experimental film, Earth in the Mouth (2020), was screened at the Punto de Vista Film Festival in Pamplona and the Courtisane Festival in Gent. Her short film Ashes by Name Is Man (2023) was selected for IFFR 2023.
