With R.M.N., he adds another searing drama about feral humanity caught in the jaws of outmoded traditions, and the violent persistence of prejudice and superstition in the modern world. Set in a Transylvanian village populated mostly by Romanians and a Hungarian minority, with smaller population of Germans and Roma, R.M.N. charts various characters’ paths, including Matthias, a hulking factory worker who has returned home to an estranged wife and son who don’t want or need him; and his former lover, Csila, embroiled in a local controversy after hiring Sri Lankan migrant workers who become scapegoats for racist villagers. Culminating in a town meeting sequence as brilliantly shot as it is dramatically gripping, R.M.N. is a ferocious depiction of lives caught between past and present. An IFC Films release.
