Dir. Midi Z. Taiwan/Myanmar. 2023, 87 mins. DCP. In Burmese with English subtitles. In Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city, an eccentric couple, Aung Min and San San Oo, operate a neighborhood clinic, providing low-cost treatments and therapies for a range of physical and psychological maladies. They also make art: San San Oo paints, while Aung Min films. In Midi Z’s poetic vision, these seemingly unrelated practices suggest the myriad ways in which earnest citizens might minister to their ailing society. As Aung Min embarks on a risky film about his state’s ongoing oppression of the Rohingya people, The Clinic widens its frame, moving from the direct observation of a single space to the self-reflexive examination of the Burmese soul. North American premiere
