Dir. Martin Scorsese. 1986, 119 mins. U.S. With Paul Newman, Tom Cruise, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, John Turturro, Helen Shaver, Bill Cobbs. Scorsese’s dynamic tale of a pool-shark facing middle-age is a magnificently textured cinematic experience, fully invested in the grungy-gorgeous details of a life on the road: motels, pool halls, truck stops, and the feeling of pride one owns—and preciously hoards—in the mastery of a sport. In an Academy Award-winning performance, Paul Newman reprises his role from The Hustler as Fast Eddie Felson, 25 years later and retired. He takes a brash young talent, played by an endearingly cocky Cruise, under his wing, but egos clash and the men part ways. Ultimately, Felson is lured back to confront his protégé and the demons that have long haunted him. Michael Ballhaus’s splendid, smoky cinematography and Robbie Robertson’s score contribute immeasurably to Scorsese’s brilliantly acted film, an example of how a seemingly modest genre work can hide untold rich psychological layers.
