Part of Tom Cruise, Above and Beyond
Dir. Sydney Pollack. 1993, 154 mins. U.S. 35mm. With Tom Cruise, Gene Hackman, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Hal Holbrook, Wilfred Brimley, Holly Hunter, Ed Harris, Gary Busey. John Grisham’s best-selling novel about an idealistic young lawyer fresh out of Harvard Law School who gets embroiled in the criminal machinations of a boutique law firm in Memphis, gets a full-bodied, gripping cinematic treatment from Sydney Pollack. The new gig seems too good to be true for both Mitch (Cruise) and his wife (Tripplehorn), luxuriating in perks and all the promise of wealth and prosperity. Yet Hackman’s avuncular mentor Avery has more than a few sinister tricks up his sleeve. Both breezy and down-and-dirty, Pollack’s adaptation, featuring a terrific, jazz-inflected score by Dave Grusin and a tremendous supporting cast, is both a standard bearer of the 1990s studio thriller and a flavorfully idiosyncratic rendition of the genre.
