Dir. Robert Altman. 1973, 112 mins. DCP. With Elliott Gould, Nina van Pallandt, Sterling Hayden. With the playfully unlikely casting of anti-heartthrob Gould as private eye Philip Marlowe, Altman’s film is both a satire of and an homage to the world of Raymond Chandler, a neo-noir classic that transplants the novelist’s languid vision of Los Angeles to the 1970s. Coming right in the middle of a hot streak for Altman—amidst M*A*S*H, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, and Nashville—The Long Goodbye is a shaggy work of art, buoyed by cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond’s lusciously seedy visuals.
