Location la: Redstone Theater
Part of Science on Screen and Welcome to the Machine
Introduced by artist David Levine and Operator director Hannah Whitaker
Dir. The Wachowskis. 1999, 136 mins. 35mm. With Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving. Lilly and Lana Wachowski’s epochal cyberpunk film revolutionized science-fiction and action filmmaking and redefined action aesthetics for the new millennium. With its cool style, slow-motion “bullet time” signature, and pop-existential themes, The Matrix spawned sequels and parodies, but nothing has come close to repeating the power of the original. Take the red pill or the blue pill—either way, enjoy.
Preceded by:
Operator
Dir. Hannah Whitaker. 2022, 8 mins. Whitaker’s rhythmic short frames women in scenes that make them seem both human and machine-like. Working with analog and digital techniques, influenced by aesthetics like those that The Matrix helped mainstream, Operator taps into a feeling of alienation and artificiality present in today’s screen-mediated world.
