Dir. Victor Fleming. 1939, 102 mins. U.S. DCP with Dolby Atmos. With Judy Garland, Jack Haley, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Margaret Hamilton, Frank Morgan. The yellow brick road has lost none of its allegorical power—or visual splendor—nearly ninety years later. The original MGM musical masterpiece whisks Dorothy Gale (Garland, ascending to a new level of stardom) from her drab black-and-white Kansas to that colorful somewhere over the rainbow, where she joins forces with the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion; vanquishes the Wicked Witch of the West; meets the man behind the curtain; and learns about life’s hard-won disillusionments. Though a television staple for decades of families, The Wizard of Oz is particularly overwhelming as a big-screen experience, its fantasy world thrilling in its magical details, its teenaged leading lady overwhelming in her emotional magnetism. Featuring a Dolby Atmos soundtrack remixed specifically for the home theater environment.
